Susan
Venable
My work is non-objective and reductivist in approach - an exploration of structure, surface, materials and the relationship between them. The reliefs are steel grids woven with copper wire juxtaposed with encaustic paintings. Archaeology, rituals, repetition, magic, and the art of indigenous societies, are all strong influences on my creative process. Both the steel and the copper have been chosen for their properties, both real and symbolic, of strength, fire, and permanence. In keeping with my environmental concerns, my metals are all fabricated of recycled material.
